I was just thinking about …. Dangerous Passions!

As human beings we can get overly excited or harmfully fixated on just about any subject you can think about. Now before I really get to what really set me off, here are few examples of what I mean ….

People often take better care of their animals (dogs and cats) than they do their own kids

People will read the newspaper from cover to cover, yet they have never read all the way through the Bible

People would rather walk than drive a certain make of car

You get the idea …

We have become a people of passions. Last week I saw a man who had painted his car like a pack of juicy fruit gum. There is another man in our town who has painted his car like a Green Bay Packers helmet.

Romans 1:26 “This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions.” Not a hockey fan? Me neither! But the NHL did get my attention this week when the Vancouver C. team lost the championship game. Fans lost their minds. So far there have 100 arrested and 150 injured. Cars and building have been burned and or vandalized. At one point the news was reporting the sence as a riot. A riot! Over losing …. wait for it … a game!!!! Of all the things that could upset a person or people and people choose to harm or put other people in harm’s way because their favorite sports team lost a game.

I am not against sports. I love ESPN, I’m watching it as I write this! Love going to games of baseball, basketball and football. People who know me call me highly competitive. But fighting, rioting, looting, burning stuff to show my discuss over my team losing? Don’t think so! I Noticed no one was upset over Canada having a miniscule number of Christians living amongst the lost, nor protests about the homeless. What about crime, poverty and war? What about abuse, neglect or slavery? Why are we so passionate about earthly activities that at best only past the time or amuse for a season while all around us people are suffering, hurting and doing without?

How would the world be different if we invested our energy, money, skills and passion to ….

Lead the lost to Jesus

Feed the homeless

Stop child abuse

cure diseases

befriend the lonely

heal the broken hearted

Set free the captive

Passionate people can change the world, for good or evil. Where is you passion driving you?
